Work @ Sync Robotics

What did I do as an Automation Technologist?

What did I do as an Automation Technologist?

Overview

During my 16-month Co-op as an Automation Technologist at Sync Robotics, I worked on the full lifecycle of industrial automation systems, from electrical panel wiring and PLC programming to safety validation and final commissioning. My role focused on integrating conveyors, robots, pneumatics, and safety devices into cohesive systems, while collaborating with engineers and technicians to deliver reliable, industry-compliant automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Panel Assembly & Wiring

  • Wired and commissioned NFPA 79 / UL 508A compliant control panels.

  • Installed terminal blocks, relays, circuit breakers, VFDs, and power supplies.

PLC Programming & Debugging

  • Developed and tested PLC logic using Beckhoff TwinCAT 3.

  • Debugged I/O mapping, structured safety logic, and HMI signal flows.

Safety Systems

  • Built 6 custom safety operator boxes for emergency stops and door interlocks.

  • Validated safety circuits according to ANSI/RIA and OSHA guidelines.

Robotics Integration

  • Assisted with integration of FANUC industrial robots into conveyor workflows.

  • Tested signal exchange between robots, PLCs, and sensors.

Pneumatics

  • Wired and tested SMC solenoid valves and pneumatic subsystems.

  • Verified actuation timing and reliability in real-world cycles.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Performed multimeter checks, continuity testing, and voltage validation before powering systems.

  • Supported full system commissioning and troubleshooting with senior engineers.

Skills Gained

  • Robotics: FANUC signal integration & HMI design basics

  • PLC Programming: Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 (ST + Ladder)

  • Electrical: Panel wiring, I/O mapping, multimeter testing, grounding

  • Pneumatics: SMC valve actuation, pneumatic safety circuits

  • Documentation: Cable labeling, safety compliance checks, BOMs
